by Edward J. Douglas, III, Secretary, Norfolk Chapter SAR
The Norfolk Chapter SAR is sponsoring the Commemoration of the Battle of the Capes on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at the Joint Expeditionary Base (Fort Story), Virginia Beach, VA. There will be a brief service at the historic Saint Theresa Chapel and then a short walk next door to the Admiral de Grasse statue for a wreath laying ceremony and photo op. All of this takes place just over the dunes on the shores of the beautiful Chesapeake Bay in close proximity of where the actual battle took place. The site of the commemoration takes place within site of 2 historic lighthouses, one of which was authorized to be built by President Washington and overseen by Alexander Hamilton. It was completed in 1792. The ceremony starts at 11:00 AM in the chapel. We welcome all who may wish to attend this important and historic event.
