Today the DAR dedicated a marker to three African American patriots that fought at Kings Mountain.  The patriots were:
Essius Bowman
John Broddy
Andrew Ferguson

After greetings from the various organizations in attendance, and the keynote address by B/G James R. Gorham, North Carolina National Guard (retired), the patriots' descendants unveiled the marker.
Treasurer General Warren Alter represented the SAR.  The Virginia SAR attendees included 1st Vice President Mike Elston, 2nd Vice President Pat Kelly, Surgeon Kirk Sheap and his wife Norma, Trustee Reverdy Wright, Peter Davenport, and Bill Schwetke.  Elston, Kelly, Davenport, and Schwetke participated in the color guard.

A special "thank you" to the SAR Compatriots for their participation in this event. Tom Phlegar of the Mecklenburg Chapter in Charlotte, NC played taps for us. It was a moving event and one which was long overdue.

Arthur Broady wrote a note sharing his feelings after our Marker Dedication which I paraphrase here, "First, thank you for the outstanding event we so joyfully participated in this morning. Rain could not diminish the significance and timeliness of the recognition and celebration. I had one of my proudest moments as a Broady today and one of my proudest being an American. All this meant so much to all of us and much of it is due to your devotion. I will share this experience with many. On behalf of so many of my family and friends, thank you for the day of memory and history making event." His words brought tears to my eyes.
