SGT MAJ JOHN CHAMPE CHAPTER PRESENTS SAR BRONZE GOOD CITIZENSHIP MEDAL TO THE FERGUSON FAMILY OF ASHBURN, VA
On 2 November 2022, at the Ferguson Residence in Ashburn, VA, the Ferguson Family was awarded the SAR Bronze Good Citizenship Medal for Outstanding and Extraordinary Citizenship in preparing and delivering meals to William “Bill” Cain and wife Linda from 13 May 2020 to June 2022 and then to Bill Cain after the passing of Linda from June 2022 to current time. Fredrick and Silvia Ferguson and their three children, Sophia, Fredrick M., and Brianna, have treated the Cains as family, making sure their meal needs were met.
Their unselfish act of Good Citizenship started when the Loudoun County Veterans Program Coordinator received a call for assistance from Mr. Cain a disabled Vietnam veteran whose wife had significant health issues. Amid COVID-19 lockdown, the Cains were unable to drive to obtain food supplies or take-out and were concerned about COVID-19 contagion if they used commercial food delivery services. American Legion Post 2001 in Ashburn assembled a team of citizens to provide meal pick up by alternating teams for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The Fergusons took Wednesday. After a few months, the Monday and Friday meal providers reported they were no longer receiving requests for help. Discussions revealed that the Fergusons were providing home cooked meals and had essentially adopted the Cain family.
Fredrick and Silvia Ferguson were presented the SAR Good Citizenship medal and certificate plus lapel pins. Sophia, Fredrick M., and Brianna were awarded Good Citizenship lapel pins and certificates. Brianna was present for the award as Fredrick M. is in Germany and Sophia in Blacksburg, VA at Virginia Tech University. Bill Cain was present for the presentation and spoke highly of the Ferguson Family. This unselfish act of citizenship over an extended period truly warrants award of the Good Citizenship medal. Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter members involved in the presentation were Ken Bonner, Barry Schwoerer, and Richard Ryan.
