On 29 October the Sgt Maj John Champe Champter sponsored the grave marking of Patriot Ezekiel Potts at the historic Potts Family Cemetery near Hillsboro. The event was attended by fifteen descendants of the patriot, a 4th great grand niece and a 6th great grand nephew. Edwin and Marty Potts, owners of the cemetery and owners of part of the original farm settled by David Potts in 1746, gave greetings on behalf of the Potts Family. Paula Schwoerer, 4th great grand niece of the Patriot gave a short biographical sketch. Ezekiel Potts was a patriot for three reasons: 1) he served as a Private in Captain Burgess Balls’s Company, 5th VA Regiment; 2) he paid th e 1783 Personal property Tax; 3) he provided 350# of beef to Continental Forces.
A color guard commanded by Dave Cook with cadence provided by drummer Doug Hall presented Colors. The Color Guard included: Paul Christensen lead musket, Darrin Schmidt U.S. Flag, Jacob Schwoerer Virginia Flag, Sean Carrigan and Will Reynolds trail muskets. Dale Corey and Allen Phillips stood as sentries at the headstone of Patriot Potts.
Sgt Maj John Champe President Ken Bonner and Vice President Barry Schwoerer conducted the SAR Patriot Grave Marking Ceremony and Jacob Schwoerer, 6th great grand nephew of the Patriot, unveiled the marker. Eleven Revolutionary War lineage organizations attended and presented wreaths. Four Ladies represented NSDAR, including: Kimberly Scott Director District VIII Virginia NSDAR; Judith Shepard Vice Regent, Elizabeth McIntosh Hammill Chapter; Nancy Watford, Regent Katoctin Chapter; and Anita Bonner, Lanes Mill Chapter. Five Compatriots represented Virgina SAR: Ernie Coggins, 1st Vice President Virginia SAR; Ken Bonner, President Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter; Dave Cook, past president Fairfax Resolves Chapter; Richard Rankin, President George Washington Chapter; and Paul Christensen, Vice President Col. James Wood II Chapter. Jacob Schwoerer represented the Col. William Grayson Society Children of the American Revolution and Doug Hall represented the Order of Founders and Patriots of America.
A seven-firelock squad commanded by Darrin Schmidt executed a three-shot volley in honor of the Patriot. Drummer Doug Hall provided cadence and musket signals. The squad included: Dale Corey, Sean Carrigan, Allen Phillips, will Reynolds, Dave Cook and Ken Bonner.
