Mr. Bill Willliamson spoke to the Williamsburg Chapter at the Colonial Heritage Club on July 10.. His topic was “The Old Guard,” the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, which is the oldest active-duty unit in the Army serving our nation since 1784. It is the Army’s official ceremonial unit and escort to the president. The Old Guard specialty platoons discussed were: Caisson, Continental Color Guard, Fife and Drum Corps, Presidential Salute Battery, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and U.S. Army Drill Team. Williamson attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served 27 years in a number of high level command assignments including the 3rd Infantry Regiment at Fort Myer, VA.
