Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter (SMJC) in Two Memorial Day Parades
Sergeant Major John Champe Chapter SAR member Warner Workman’s float joined the SAR team in the National Memorial Day parade in Washington DC. The SAR team included National SAR officers and multiple Virginia SAR representatives.
In addition to Compatriot Workman, SMJC participants included past president Ken Bonner and chapter Historian David Welker. Bonner and Welker were joined by their wives, Anita Bonner, and Margaret Welker, both from the Lanes Mill Chapter DAR.
A second team from SMJC provided color guard to lead the Hamilton, Va., Memorial Day parade. The color guard marched in front of a truck driven by SMJC President Barry Schwoerer. The truck towed a small trailer with a 1/5 size Liberty Bell. Elizabeth McIntosh Hammill Chapter DAR member Paula Schwoerer rode in the truck bed ringing the bell as the parade progressed west down Colonial Highway through the village of Hamilton. The SMJC color guard was composed of member Steve Van Deusen, Vice President Mark Sink, Chaplain Jim Watts, all wearing militia attire.
