WWII Veteran and hero Eli Linden was presented a SAR Wounded Warrior Coin and Certificate by SMJC President Ken Bonner at a gathering of family and friends on Sunday. To open the event, a five person Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard in Militia uniform presented Colors.  The Color Guard was composed of Color Guard Commander Barry Schwoerer-lead musket, Ken Bonner-United States Flag, Steve Riddle-Virginia Commonwealth Flag, Dale Corey (Dual CJW-II)-SAR 250th Anniversary flag, and Jacob Schwoerer-trail musket.

Following presentation of Colors Delegate David Reid (32nd District) presented Veteran Linden a Proclamation from the Virginia Legislature Commemorating him for extraordinary service to his country during WWII.  Delegate Reid also presented a Virginia 75th Anniversary of WWII Coin.  The Color Guard musket men took position on each side of the table in front of Veteran Linden and went to PRESENT ARMS for the presentation of the Proclamation and 75th Anniversary Coin and presentation of the SAR Wounded Warrior Coin.

Eli Linden was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and French Legion of Honor. He participated in tD-Day at Omaha Beach, was wounded at the Battle of the Hedgerows, and became a Prisoner of War in Stalag 4D when he was captured by German Forces in 1944.  He will celebrate his 100th birthday in April 2023. His wife Thelma, two daughters, a son, grandson and great-grandson were present amongst other family and friends.  Several veterans who live at Ashleigh at Landsdowne attended and gave their congratulations. Plans are being made to celebrate Eli’s 100th birthday with another gathering of Family, Friends, other Veterans and the Color Guard from SMJC Chapter.

The event was organized by Chariots of Honor, a Veterans group headed in Loudoun County by Herb Valle and a small group of Veterans dedicated to recognizing the accomplishments of aging veterans.  They gather a team of vehicles, and drive by the aged veteran honking, waving flags and conveying congratulations and THANKS for serving the United States.  Chariots of Honor celebrated Eli Linden’s 99th birthday in April 2022 and worked with Delegate Reid to produce the Virginia Legislature proclamation.  Photographs courtesy Deborah Corey
