Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter joins NSDAR in Bench Dedication

On Saturday, 23 OCT 2022, the Sgt Maj John Champe and Fairfax Resolves Chapters provided color guard for the Lanes Mill Chapter NSDAR dedication of a Trex® bench at St John's Episcopal Church in Centreville. St John's is a historic church located in the Centreville Historic District.

The Trex® corporation donated the bench to the Lanes Mill Chapter NSDAR after the members collected 0ver 500 pounds of plastic bags and other types of plastic material. The collection effort was conducted over the winter of 2021-2022. After working with community organizations, the chapter identified St. John's Episcopal church to receive the bench.  The headstone, and SAR Patriot Marker, for Patriot John Orr may be found under a large magnolia tree in the adjacent cemetery.

Vice Regent Laura Tubridy opened the dedication with the background of the project and then called for the Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard to present colors. After the Pledge of Allegiance, the Color Guard went to order arms and stood at attention while the dedication by church clergy was conducted. The dedication was led by Reverend Deacon Steve Busch. The Color Guard consisted of lead and trail muskets as honor guard. Musketmen were Dave Cook and Jim Cordes from Fairfax Resolves Chapter Virginia SAR. Three compatriots from the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter carried flags. They were: Barry Schwoerer with U.S. Flag, Ken Bonner with Virginia Flag, and Mark Sink with the NSDAR Flag.
