A Hero's Welcome: Virginia SAR and Honor Guards Unite at Dulles

Virginia SAR Compatriots Welcome Veterans with Honor and Respect at Dulles International Airport

(Dulles, Va. - August 28, 2024) — The Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution (Virginia SAR) compatriots from three chapters came together to extend a warm and patriotic welcome to 117 veterans arriving on a Chicago Honor Flight at Dulles International Airport. The event was a heartfelt tribute to the brave men and women who served in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

As the veterans disembarked from the People Movers and transitioned to waiting buses, the SAR team consisting of members of Sgt Maj John Champe, Col James Wood II, and Fairfax Resolves chapters proudly presented the colors, creating a striking and respectful display. The veterans, representing all branches of the military—ten from the USAF, 80 from the Army, seven Marines, and 20 from the Navy—were visibly moved by the honor and recognition bestowed upon them.

The SAR team was seamlessly integrated (see photo) with Honor Guards from the Transportation Security Administration, Loudoun County Sheriff, and Fairfax Fire and Rescue. This collaboration ensured a dignified and memorable experience for the veterans. After the buses were loaded, the SAR team moved outside to a position in front of the buses, presenting the colors once more as the buses departed under a motorcycle police escort.

The Honor Flight program is dedicated to honoring America's veterans by transporting them to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifices. The Virginia SAR's participation in this event underscores their commitment to honoring the legacy of those who have served our nation.

This event was not just a display of patriotism but also a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these veterans. The presence of the SAR and the Honor Guards provided a sense of unity and gratitude, ensuring that these heroes know their service is remembered and appreciated.

The SAR team (see photo left to right) consisted of: Richard Tyler and Paul Christensen from Col James Wood II Chapter; Steve Van Deusen from the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter; Jim Cordes from the Fairfax Resolves Chapter SAR; and Chip Daniel and Barry Schwoerer from the Col. James Wood II Chapter.
