Virginia SAR Receives Two New Grants from Pomeroy Foundation to Honor Revolutionary War Patriots

Alexandria and Wytheville, VA — The Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (Virginia SAR) is proud to announce the award of two new grants from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation in support of its ongoing Patriot Burials® marker program. These grants will fund the creation and installation of historical markers at two cemeteries in Virginia where Revolutionary War Patriots are laid to rest.

The newly awarded markers are:

  • Pomeroy Patriot Burial Marker VA 55108
Sponsored by David Harrity / George Washington Chapter, Virginia SAR
Presbyterian Cemetery and Columbarium, Alexandria, VA

  • Pomeroy Patriot Burial Marker VA 55109
Sponsored by Rollie Nye Jr. / Lt. David Cox Chapter
St. John's Lutheran Church and Cemetery, Wytheville, VA

These vibrant, cast-aluminum markers—featuring the distinctive red, yellow, and blue design unique to the Virginia SAR–Pomeroy partnership—will soon be manufactured and delivered for installation. Unveiling ceremonies at each site will be announced in the coming months, offering local communities and descendants of these Patriots the opportunity to honor their legacy.

Since launching the partnership in 2023, the Virginia SAR–Pomeroy Foundation Grants Committee has worked diligently to identify and commemorate burial sites of Revolutionary War Patriots across the Commonwealth. With over 4,900 known Patriot graves in Virginia, the program plays a vital role in preserving and promoting the stories of those who helped secure American independence.

“These markers are more than just signs—they are enduring tributes to the courage and sacrifice of our nation’s founders,” said Michael Rhodes, Chair of the Virginia SAR–Pomeroy Committee. “Each installation deepens our connection to the past and ensures that future generations can stand in the presence of history.”

The Patriot Burials® marker program is made possible through the generosity of the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, which provides funding for the production, pole, and shipping of each marker. The Foundation shares the SAR’s mission of celebrating community history and honoring those who shaped the nation’s founding.

To date, Virginia SAR chapters have sponsored numerous markers across the state, from Amelia Court House to Lynchburg, Hillsboro, and Stephens City. The addition of Alexandria and Wytheville to this growing list reflects the expanding reach and impact of the program.
