A City Celebrates: Thousands Turn Out for the 2026 George Washington Birthday Parade
Alexandria, Virginia—The streets of Old Town came alive on Saturday, February 14, as more than 2,000 spectators lined the parade route to celebrate the 294th birthday of General George Washington. Under crisp winter skies and a festive spirit that warmed the entire city, the annual George Washington Birthday Celebration Parade became a showcase of patriotism, community pride, and the enduring legacy of America’s founding generation. Among the most visible participants were the compatriots, daughters, children, and guests of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution, whose presence added both color and historical resonance to the day.
This year’s parade was made especially memorable by the participation of SAR President General Michael J. Elston, Esq., and DAR President General Ginnie Sebastian Storage, who served together as co‑grand marshals. Their leadership and partnership symbolized the unity of purpose shared by the SAR and DAR as America approaches its Semiquincentennial. Their presence drew warm applause from the crowds and set a tone of celebration rooted in service, remembrance, and national pride.
The George Washington Chapter, Virginia SAR, proudly served as the host chapter and Gold sponsor of the 2026 parade, continuing its long tradition of supporting Alexandria’s signature civic event. The chapter’s contributions were visible throughout the procession, from its marching compatriots joined with compatriots from other chapters (see photo above by Tom Roth) to its coordination efforts behind the scenes. A highlight of the day was the impressive presentation by the Sgt. Major John Champe Chapter, whose “Spirit of Liberty” mobile diorama captivated spectators with its vivid depiction of Revolutionary‑era themes and patriotic symbolism.
The chapter’s dedication and creativity did not go unnoticed. At the conclusion of the parade, the George Washington Chapter, Virginia SAR, was honored to receive the inaugural Semiquincentennial Chairman’s Award from the George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee. This new Grand Prize recognizes the best overall entry in the 2026 parade, and the chapter’s selection for this distinction stands as a testament to the hard work, enthusiasm, and collaborative spirit of its members. The award also reflects the chapter’s commitment to elevating public understanding of America’s founding and inspiring the next generation of patriots.
As the crowds dispersed and Old Town returned to its familiar rhythm, the sense of shared celebration lingered. The 2026 parade was more than a civic tradition—it was a moment of unity, gratitude, and anticipation as the nation moves toward its 250th anniversary.
Together, the solemn commemoration at the Tomb of the Unknown and the joyful celebration of the parade created a powerful weekend of remembrance, unity, and patriotic pride. For the Virginia SAR, the day marked not only a successful event, but a proud milestone in its ongoing mission to honor the legacy of George Washington and the patriots who secured America’s independence, and served a chance to honor the past, engage the present, and inspire the future as the Commonwealth prepares for the Semiquincentennial.
