Virginia SAR Membership Growth Surges in First Half of 2026 as America 250 Celebrations Intensify

As President of the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution, I am proud to share that the first half of 2026 has produced exceptional membership activity across the Commonwealth. From January 1 through July 4, our chapters documented 189 Patriot ancestors, including 168 new member applications, 20 supplemental applications, and 1 memorial application — far exceeding the previous six‑month period. 

This surge reflects something deeper than numbers. It reflects Virginians embracing our shared role as Witnesses to History during the 250th Anniversary of American Independence. Across the Commonwealth, Independence Day 2026 was more meaningful, more colorful, and more impactful than any in recent memory. Our ceremonies, educational programs, and community commemorations demonstrated that the spirit of 1776 is alive and resonant in 2026.

And now, with America 250 well underway, we must continue this momentum.

New Member Applications: Extraordinary Growth Across Virginia

New member applications — each representing a newly documented Patriot ancestor — reached 168, with strong contributions from chapters of every size and region. Several chapters posted double‑digit totals:

• George Mason – 13

• George Washington – 11

• Gen. Daniel Morgan – 11

• Sgt. Maj. John Champe – 11

• Richard Henry Lee – 9

• Col. James Wood II – 8

• Richmond – 6

• Patrick Henry – 6

• Great Bridge – 5

• Culpeper Minutemen – 4

Additional chapters documenting new Patriot ancestors include Thomas Nelson Jr, Col. Fielding Lewis, Nansemond Indian Patriots, New River Valley, Col. George Waller, Norfolk, Gen. William Campbell, Dan River, Fort Harrison, Thomas Jefferson, Jamestown Headquarters, James Monroe, and one application with no chapter affiliation.

This broad statewide participation demonstrates that Virginians are actively reconnecting with their Revolutionary heritage during this milestone commemorative year.

Supplemental Applications: Deepening Lineage and Historical Understanding

Supplemental applications — where existing members document additional Patriot ancestors — totaled 20, reflecting ongoing genealogical research and a deepening appreciation for the many individuals who contributed to the cause of independence.

Each supplemental application strengthens the Society’s historical record and preserves additional stories of service and sacrifice.

Memorial Applications

The George Washington Chapter recorded one memorial application, ensuring that the lineage of a deceased descendant is formally documented and honored.

National SAR 250th Anniversary Membership Promotion

To support America 250 and encourage continued growth, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution is offering a special 250th Anniversary membership promotion:

New-lineage applications postmarked through July 31, 2026, receive a reduced National fee of $76 (regularly $150).  The promotional pricing concludes on August 1, 2026.

Prospective members can take advantage of this offer by creating an online account and working with their local chapter to document their lineage. This limited-time promotion provides an excellent opportunity for Virginians who have considered joining the SAR to do so during this historic commemorative year.

The documentation of 189 Patriot ancestors in just six months is more than a numerical achievement. It is a testament to the dedication of chapter registrars, genealogists, volunteers, and new applicants who understand that America 250 is not simply a celebration — it is a moment to stand as Witnesses to History.

This surge strengthens the Society’s ability to:

• support youth education and scholarship programs,

• honor veterans and public safety professionals,

• partner with schools, churches, and civic organizations, and

• share the stories of Patriot ancestors with communities across the Commonwealth.

As President of the Virginia SAR, I encourage all compatriots — and prospective new members — to keep the momentum going. America 250 is a once‑in‑a‑generation commemoration. Every new member, every supplemental lineage, and every documented Patriot strengthens our mission and ensures that these stories endure.
