2024 Crossing of the Dan

On Saturday, February 17, 2024, a Commemoration of the Crossing of the Dan was held in South Boston, VA.  This event was hosted by the Dan River Chapter (VA Society) and was conducted in cooperation with the Berryman Green NSDAR, Halifax County Historical Society, South Boston- Halifax County Museum along with the Towns of South Boston and Halifax.

This nationally recognized event was well attended for the observance of the February 14, 1781 crossing of the Dan River near modern day South Boston, VA.

The keynote speaker, Mr. William Guerrant (author of Let a Pillar Arise) called General Greeene’s Crossing of the Dan and events surrounding it, “The greatest turnaround in American history”.

After the author’s speech, a contingent of attendees that included members of the VASSAR Color guard and the local Halifax County JROTC led the group to nearby Constitution Square for wreath presentations.  A ceremonial wreath was presented into the Dan River and was followed by cannon and musket firing by the 7th Virginia Regiment.
