Category: NATIONAL SPONSORED EVENT

If you attend only one chapter function a year, this should be the one.

Our annual observance of the Battle of Great Bridge is a National SAR event, and this year marks the 12th year that the Norfolk Chapter has co-hosted this with the Great Bridge Chapter of the DAR of this very significant event in Virginia history.

For the Daughters of the American Revolution, it will be the 122nd time that they have commemorated those patriots who made history with their complete victory over Lord Dunmore’s regular and volunteer forces by Virginia and North Carolina Patriots on December 9, 1775.

This battle proved strategically important for the Revolutionary Cause. Patriot heroes defeated British regulars. The Virginia militia, reinforced from North Carolina, quickly captured Norfolk and forced the total removal of the King’s forces from Virginia for over three years. The resulting control of the Chesapeake Bay provided unhindered transportation of troops, food, weapons, and supplies to Washington’s Army. In Virginia, fence sitters were persuaded by the victory to join the Patriot cause, and Virginia declared independence early in 1776.

We will gather at 11am on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at the Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways Museum, 1775 Historic Way, Chesapeake, Virginia.
It’s December so the weather can be unpredictable.

In the event of inclement weather, we will move to the Council Chambers at the Chesapeake Municipal Center, 306 Cedar Road, Chesapeake.

So, there is no excuse not to show your chapter pride and come out and celebrate the day.
