PG Michael J. Elston’s Vision for the SAR: A Legacy of Leadership and Patriotism
In his induction as the 118th President General of the SAR, Michael J. Elston delivered a heartfelt and forward-looking address at the 135th Annual Congress of the National SAR, that honored the society’s rich heritage while charting a bold course for its future. His speech emphasized:
Commitment to the SAR Mission: Elston reaffirmed the society’s dedication to preserving the memory of Revolutionary War patriots and promoting the values of liberty and civic responsibility.
Leadership with Purpose: He spoke of leading with integrity, transparency, and unity—calling on members to work together to strengthen the SAR’s impact nationwide and at the local level at the Louisville, Kentucky headquarters.
Education and Outreach: Elston highlighted the importance of engaging younger generations through educational programs, historical preservation, and community involvement, with a particular emphasis in partnering with the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.).
Inclusivity and Growth: He encouraged expanding membership and fostering a fun and welcoming environment that reflects the diversity of America’s Revolutionary legacy. He called upon each Compatriot to issue Flag Certificates and Bronze Good Citizenship Medals to deserving candidates.
Honoring Tradition While Embracing Innovation: While respecting the ceremonial and historical roots of the SAR, Elston advocated for modernizing operations and communications to better serve members and the public.
His speech was both a tribute to the SAR’s enduring values and a call to action for its future. It set a tone of optimism, unity, and purpose—inviting all members to be active stewards of the society’s mission.
Elston joined the SAR in 2006 and became the George Washington Chapter, Virginia SAR President in 2013, followed by his election as Virginia SAR President in 2017. Now in 2025, our chapter compatriot Elston becomes the 118th President General of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (sar.org).
