Celebrating Patriot Burials: Pomeroy Marker Dedication at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery
On a cool and crisp autumn day, November 23, 2024, the Colonel James Wood II Chapter of the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution (Virginia SAR) gathered at the historic Trinity Lutheran Church in Stephens City, Virginia. The occasion was to dedicate a Virginia SAR–Pomeroy Foundation Patriot Burials®️ marker, a significant addition to the cemetery that honors the final resting places of American Revolutionary War patriots.
The William G. Pomeroy Foundation, committed to the celebration and preservation of community history, provided the grant for this important marker. Their mission to commemorate historical events and figures is realized through grants for signage, including roadside markers and plaques. One of their notable programs recognizes the burial sites of Revolutionary War patriots, an initiative embraced by the Virginia Society SAR. By installing these markers and conducting dedication ceremonies, the Virginia SAR ensures that the contributions of these early American heroes are remembered and honored.
As the wind gently rustled through the trees, 36 attendees gathered to witness the dedication ceremony. Dale Corey, serving as the emcee, opened the ceremony. Reverend James Simmons provided the invocation, setting a reflective and respectful tone for the event. The Virginia SAR Color Guard, resplendent in their uniforms, presented the colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Marshall DeHaven and the SAR Pledge led by Philip Hunter.
Virginia SAR President William D. Greaf offered greetings and shared a brief biography of the patriots interred at the cemetery, reminding the audience of the rich history and sacrifice associated with the site. Marc Robinson and Reverend James Simmons led the formal dedication of the sign, with Pastor Janice M. Lowden of Trinity Lutheran Church assisting in the unveiling of the marker. Compatriots Sean Carrigan and Richard Tyler provided additional support during the unveiling.
The Virginia SAR Color Guard stood sentinel, adding a solemn and dignified presence to the proceedings. Wreaths were presented by President Greaf, representatives from six Virginia SAR Chapters, three Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) Chapters, and two Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) societies. The collaborative effort underscored the shared commitment to honoring the legacy of Revolutionary War patriots.
Notable participants from various SAR Chapters included Commander Allan Phillips, Safety Officer Richard Tyler, Bryan Buck, Sean Carrigan, Paul Christensen, Dale Corey, Chip Daniel, Kelly Ford, Philip Hunter, Brett Osborn, Will Reynolds, Eric Robinson, Marc Robinson, and Jim Simmons from the Col James Wood II Chapter. Additionally, Ken Bonner, Barry Schwoerer, and Jacob Schwoerer from the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter; Ken Morris from the George Mason Chapter; Tom Roth, State Historian, from the George Washington Chapter; and Michael Wilson from the Col William Grayson Chapter attended.
