Key Aspects of the Battle at Kemp's Landing

  • Context: The battle arose from ongoing tensions between the British authorities and the colonial militia, fueled by issues like the removal of gunpowder and Dunmore's actions regarding enslaved people.
  • Patriot Ambush: The Patriots, a group of inexperienced militiamen, set up an ambush along the road to Great Bridge, near Kemp's Landing.
  • Early Firing: The militia's inexperience led them to open fire too early, spoiling the ambush and alerting the British.
  • British Response: Dunmore's trained soldiers quickly returned fire and moved through the woods, dispersing the militia.
  • Outcome: The Patriots suffered casualties, including the capture of key leaders, while the British sustained only one minor wound.
  • Dunmore's Proclamation: Following the skirmish, Dunmore issued a proclamation offering freedom to enslaved people who would join the British army, further fueling the conflict and alienating many in Virginia.
