Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

          As of July 21, nine states including Virginia have reported 4,173 confirmed cases  (since May 1, 2026) of disease caused by the intestinal parasite causing cyclosporiasis.  The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) reported at least 308 people have required hospitalization; there have been no deaths.  At least 7,500 additional cases have been reported and are awaiting confirmation by laboratory testing.  Taylor Farms distributed the agent of infection, iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico, to Taco Bell Restaurants, various food services, and Walmart stores as “Iceberg Salad.”  On July 17, Taylor Farms recalled all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico.  A complete list of products distributed to food services can be found in the recall notice below.  You are advised to take measures to avoid the illness.

What Symptoms Does the Parasite Cause?  Infection is accompanied by loss of appetite with frequent watery, diarrhea stools and other intestinal symptoms such as bloating, cramping, increased gas, nausea and vomiting.  Body aches and headaches may occur with fever.  Prolonged illness can result in dehydration and weight loss.  The usual course of the illness is a few days to a week, but symptoms may come and go for a month.  Immunocompromised people (e.g., those with chronic illness, cancer, etc.) may experience severe illness and require hospitalization and treatment.

How Do I Prevent It?  First, if you are caring for an infected individual, handle all secretions/emissions with gloves and wash hands thoroughly and often.  Water purification processes can eliminate the parasite. Avoid known sources of contaminated lettuce as cited in this article.  Refrigerate cut fresh vegetables as soon as possible.  Indoor hydroponics growers use the same water we drink in growing their produce; this is your best source for raw vegetables and greens.  Wash hands before handling any food and wash all fruits and vegetables before eating.  Cut away any discoloration or damage from the edible.  Cooking can kill the parasite if used in a prepared dish, not raw or as salad. 

Are There Any Treatments?  There are no vaccines for prevention.  Most healthy people recover without treatment, but in more prolonged or threatening situations a drug called Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) can be used if not allergic to it.  IV hydration may be needed.
